MARCH Associates worked with Utica College to refresh the entrances and lounge at South Hall, a dormitory for primarily first year students that was constructed in 1963. Our scope of work was focused on an octagonal shaped central structure which supports residential wings off of both sides. The scope of the project included reenvisioning the security desk, as well as upgrading finishes, fixtures, equipment, and technology in the lounge, pantry, and bathroom. In an effort to support a broader range of student uses, a portion of the open lounge was separated into a meeting/study room. ‘Café’ style seating was also introduced to the lounge and a new electric insert was built into the original fireplace. Resilient flooring was installed in the lounge and entry area to ease in the maintenance and upkeep of the space. With contemporary furniture added to compliment the fresh finishes and bright lighting, these spaces will better appeal to students, and foster a stronger sense of community for all who reside in the residence hall.
